AN INTRODUCTION TO THE PROT DISTRICT

NO.4 Stevedoring Company of Nanjing port is located at 118d48` E and 30d N and situated in Nanjing Xin Sheng Wei foreign Trade Port of lower reaches of the Yangtze River . By land, the Port is 15 Km from the down town of Nanjing, by water upwards 15 Km is Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge and downwards 374 Km is the mouth of Yangtze River . Here, the water,front are stable,and the width of deepwater channel amount to 800 meters.The depth of water in front bank of wharves can still reach -11 meters and more in the lowest water level, the ships for ten thousand shipping tons can come alongside all the year round.     The land and water transportation in the harbor is easy and the Company has all the necessary machines and transportation equipment. The warehoues and piling space in the harbor are spacious. No.4 Stevedoring Company is mainly engaged in the loading and unloading of sundry goods,bulk cargoes and containers. 　      The Company went into operation in 1985. At present, it is equipped with 5 berths for ten thousand shipping tons, 1 berth for one thousand shipping tons,16 pontoons on the river, 10 ocean going ships for ten thousand shipping tons can moor at the same time.     Along the bank of wharves,all kinds of machineary,equipments and vehicles are fully equipped. Water front of the wharves is 670 meters,land in depth is 500 meters, spacious warehouses and large piling space,the annual handing capacity is 2.16 millions tons. Approved by the Standing Committee of the National People`s Congress in March of 1986,the port is open to foreign ships, now it has opened up navigation with 50 and more countries and regions. About 10 institutions concerning foreign affairs have their own office in the port,they can handle all the formalities concerned at all times.     The transportation is convenient. Two highways in the port go straight to urban district and the railway is connected with Yao Hua Men marshalling yard which is the biggest in East China, and the railway is also connected to other three trunk lines of HU-Ning,Jin-Pu,and Wan-Gan.THe waterway is linked with the Provinces of Anhui,Jiangxi,Hunan,Hubei and Sichuan in the upper and middle reaches of the Yangtze River. In the lower reaches,through the mouth of the Yangtze River, it goes straight to all the major ports in the World. A bonded warehouse for export supervision and import bonded is also situated here,which is only one in Nanjing port.
